This piece addresses those questions thoroughly and explores some of the most common concerns, providing a clear look at online training’s features, its ideal audience, its real-world impact, and its value. This piece addresses those questions thoroughly and explores some of the most common concerns…especially if you’re wondering the same things!
What Exactly is Online Training?
Online training is an incredible tool we have today, providing training and more information at a discounted price as compared to any other time previously. Many different ways that online training can be delivered but the goal is all the same, increase the reach of trainers all around the world while allowing you to workout on your own time and giving you all the tools that you need in order to succeed in hitting your goals. Some of these services that are provided can be:
Customized Training Plans
Customized Nutrition Goals
1-1 Support
Form and Intensity Reviews
Others may offer different variety but this is largely what it comes down to. Most things that you can get with an in-person trainer can be done through an online medium without you or the trainer needing to change your schedule or shorten your workout to meet the timing demands of all clients. This then allows you to work the trainer that you enjoy without being limited by their schedule or demands in life.
It doesn’t need to be complicated but this is something that I think makes people a bit scared since the common perception of fitness is that it needs to completely revolve around a gym. That is not true, that is another thing that allows online training to take the next step, since it doesn’t need to be locked to a gym, it can more easily meet you where you’re at. If you prefer at home bodyweight workouts, that can be done. If have a set amount of equipment, then that can also be accommodated. Training is just as much an art as it is a science, taking those scientific principles and applying them to the situation that you have presented is what further separates one program from another.
Does Online Training Fit Everyone?
Now the next most common question after “What is online training” is “who is online training for?” Which is a very good question as I don’t believe online training is for everybody. It might be at one point or another but there are people who may be better off starting with an in-person trainer in a gym. Some people that it may not be great for:
Somebody who needs a high level of motivation and accountability to get started
Somebody who is not very technologically inclined
Somebody who is not confident in their abilities just yet
All of these are absolutely reasonable reasons to not choose online training. As they will diminish the results that you will be getting at the end of it. If you can’t properly use the app or coaching method then you will be leaving information on the table. The limitations of needing that high level of motivation is completely personal to knowing yourself. If you’re a person who needs to feel that pressure to show up for something other than yourself, then this may be a reason to have an in-person coach. That doesn’t mean that down the road it might not change when it becomes a bigger part of your routine. However, the motivation to show up consistently and having that anchor to show up to may just be what you need!
Is Online Training Right for You?
There are a lot of people who would be greatly served by online training and having that support system at their fingertips. Often, people don’t need a full in-person review of each rep they do as they’ve progressed past that direct need. There are a few examples of who benefits greatly from online training:
Somebody who is goal-oriented and can execute on a plan to reach their goals. These self-starters thrive with a clear roadmap and just need guidance to stay on track.
Busy professionals whose schedules don’t align with in-person trainers. They can sneak in a workout between meetings or late at night, no commuting required.
Somebody who doesn’t have a consistent time to go to the gym and needs flexibility. Online training bends to their life, whether it’s 6 a.m. or midnight.
Somebody who isn’t fully confident enough to dive into the gym. They can build skills at home first, gaining confidence without the spotlight of a crowded weight room.
People in more rural or remote areas. Where gyms or coaches are scarce, online training delivers expertise straight to their door.
Other great fits include frequent travelers who need workouts that adapt to hotel rooms, intermediate exercisers looking to level up with tailored plans, or parents juggling kids who crave the convenience of home sessions. These groups all benefit heavily from the flexibility this medium allows. They’re self-motivated to show up, just needing the support and guidance of a trainer from afar to assure them their efforts are driving toward their goals. Ultimately, online training is for anyone ready to take ownership of their fitness journey with a little digital nudge—people who value structure, accessibility, and the freedom to train on their terms.
Does Online Training Really Work?
Many question the next piece of online training which is how effective is it truly? Online training can be just as effective as in-person training, if it’s done right and fits your needs. Plenty of real-world results back this up, people have shed pounds, built muscle, and hit PRs with online coaching alone. The key is consistency and communication. With the journey laid out and 1-1 support, you’re not left guessing. You’re following a roadmap designed for you. Form reviews via video mean trainers can still catch mistakes, though it’s not as instant as someone hovering over your shoulder.
Effectiveness hinges on you, too. If you’re the type to slack off without a gym’s vibe, it might fall flat. But if you stick to it and stay open about your situation, you’ll see great progress. It takes a lot of trust and communication in order to fully dial in the program for something that works for you. Ensuring that you’re consistently on the same wavelength as your coach. It’s not about replacing in-person training; it’s about making fitness work wherever you are. As my favorite teachers said, exercise is a science and an art. Using scientific principles of exercise and art of designing the program that will fit the individuals lifestyle and desires to create the optimal plan for them.
Is Online Training a Good Deal?
Online Training itself can sometimes be viewed as very expensive. However, that is usually from the larger upfront cost that can be associated with it. When you factor in what you receive, it turns out to be quite cost effective in relation to in-person training. Many times in-person training is once a week for $75-150 sessions which over the course of the month, that one session a week can be more than the average cost of a month of online training at around $250-500 per month. The big benefit, online training provides you a plan for each day. You get the total monthly volume programmed in for you without needing to be left wondering if you need to move your schedule around.
The other big benefit of online training is, a gym membership is completely optional! If you’re rural or on a budget, the travel time, the convenience, and the cost efficiency for the guidance that you receive is fantastic! However, it’s still an investment in yourself, a lot of this information is available online and you can do it yourself. The investment in a coach is investing in the confidence that you’re headed in the right path and if your goals change you can pivot the plan in itself.
